Flextip ETT introducer (boujie)

Hi Simon;

Althougth not widely avaliable in all theatre/A&E units within the UK, I
believe each theatre dept up and down the country has at least 1 McCoy
Blade, if not more.

As for its success, I have to say I have seen it used many times but
only once for the reason it was designed for.

Current trials with Straight blades have proved to be much better than
using McCoy's; of course this takes practice and the user to be familiar
with how to use them properly on adults.

Regards

Chris

Dear All,

I have to admit to being a little surprised about the discussion on
gum-elastic bougies. It's such a routine piece of equipment in my
medical life, it didn't occur to me that other colleagues may not be
familiar with it's existence.

May I ask whether the McCoy laryngoscope is a regionally guarded secret
as well?

Hey, I just wanted to throw in my little secret that has helped me out
in a few circumstances. It's called the howland lock. Works best with
Miller blades. It takes the normal blade/scope angel and adds a 45
degree curve to it. For those who have not seen/heard of it here is a
link as to what it is. Many of the O.R.'s in this area have them as a
back up.

Take care all!

Damn fine piece of equipment. Bailed me out of a couple of tight spots
before. Here in SA it is pretty much left up to the individual to get
hold of one. Was introduced to it by an anaethetist friend of mine.
Every intubator should have one.

training with it, teaching in the paramedic program at Northeastern Univ
in MA, Im under the assumption that in MA its only approved for Umass
medical center EMS and Boston Medflight. Im thinking about doing a
research project to see the use of it as a back up device, when direct
visualization is difficult or impossible, or the use of it on a c-spine
pt that needs intubation? Any thoughts?
