Volunteering (was Re: News Item: Iraq's Doctors)

Over the several months that I have been a member of this list, I have
been fascinated by the many stories of wonderful work that many of the
list members have done in dealing with natural disasters, armed
conflict and other crisis situations at home, whereever that may be for
you. M. Butler's question now has me wondering whether there are people
on the list who have experience volunteering in foreign crisis areas?

If so, I would be interested in hearing what the experience was like.
What, for example, were the best and worst parts of your time
volunteering? Any big surprises or information you wish you had had
before leaving? Would you do it again or recommend it to others? 

I would also be grateful for any information about the NGOs that
provide help in such regions. Which organization(s) did you go with? Do
some organizations have particularly good or bad reputations among
their peers?
