Agreed, of course; but jeez, Dr. Mattox, you're asking a lot of the
victim here: if the reported pain factor is accurate, the impulse to
pull the barb out must be overwhelming -- even in someone who knows
better. From what little I've seen of Steve Irwin (may he rest in
peace) the man operated largely on reflexes.
Then again, if there's truly venom involved, there may have been no
correct approach (pull the needle or leave the poison). Does anyone on
the List know the nature of the toxin in these creatures?
If memory serves, autopsies are not always a matter of public record in
Australia. It'd be interesting to know what was found.
Best of luck with the video, but to be honest, part of me is hopeful
it's been destroyed already. Last thing we need on the newsstands, or
the internet.

Subject: Crocodile hunter- EXTRACTION of foreign body
I have learned that the victim was FILMED removing the foreign body from
this chest. I have been unable to obtain a copy of this self
extraction of a
fatal chest penetration with a foreign body, but will keep trying.
This will resurrect the discussions regarding removal of an impaled
foreign
body
