An observation from your post:  "Rights" = votes.  So, you are right - oops -  correct in that both sides of the isle are to blame, because neither side will ever do the right thing as long as there are votes to be had.

As long as the politicians can keep us arguing amongst ourselves concerning this and every other issue, no progress will be made.  It is a similar situation with most other problems in our society.  
   
  BOTH  the libs and the conservatives are to blame.  They have subtle differences concerning what "rights" are more important, but VERY FEW are actually spelled out in the constitution.
  BOTH parties value a different version of the same "statist" ideology, i.e. the government is responsible for your well being/success/freedom from this or that.
   
  Until another political party (libertarian perhaps) can convince people that with more indivdual freedom (and responsibility,) everyone benefits, we will continue to argue about the crumbs while very few of us are as satisfied and as free as we would like.
   
  Just my one cent (two cents before tax)
