Dr. Mattox, as a physician leader, I have a question for you: Have you
completed the FEMA Introduction to Incident Command courses (ICS 100HC, ICS
200
HC, IS 700 and IS 800)? These courses are required in many locales to
operate
inside the EOC, and are mandated for department directors and potential
Hospital Incident Command Staff by October of this year.

Yes, and I am proud of the certificates I have from them

Good...have you encouraged your peers and required your residents and
fellows to do the same thing? I can promise you that taking those courses and being
willing to talk to the rural emergency managers has given me an interesting
entry into the local disaster response systems in the past 5 years.

Based on talking to many folks at the Nashville conference last month, the
number of physicians nationwide who have not bothered to learn the first thing
about the ICS system is scary!

I'm surprised that you have had that much trouble getting a hearing at the
local EOC level in that case, as I have had a much better reception in rural
Louisiana and Missouri in the past.

Have you tried talking to the Medical Director of the DMAT in Houston?

Charles S. Krin, DO FAAFP
