I just got back to my office and found about 100 messages saying TEST WORKS.
With all due respect, this is no test and shows only what we already knew,
that we have a vibrant listserve. We have already seen that we can
communicate in real time and have done so for issues both important and
trivial. How this translates into a network that is either integrated or
collaborative in terms of real-time disaster response is beyond me.
If this exercise is "like a disaster drill," then it should have a purpose
and goal and defined metrics for evaluation. Merely hitting a "reply" button
proves nothing.
I agree that the trauma list (as does ccm-l) has great potential. What we
should be doing is virtual brain storming as to how that might be
accomplished.

I am totally supportive of Dr. Richard Carmona's decision to testify before
Congress. I support what he said. I support what Dr. Satcher and Koop

I have no direct evidence one way or another whether there has been abuse of
prisoners at Gitmo. I am aware of numerous press opinions on BOTH sides of
this issue. I have talked to some of the civilian physicians who have
toured those facilities. From what I have learned from people that I trust is
that superb clinical health care is rendered in wonderful facilities. I
do think that the press has distorted the story, as they always do. I do
NOT think Gitmo has anything to do with the scope and background of the 3
surgeons general presentation to Congress and CNN. The focus was something
entirely different.
NOTHING was stated in any of my statements regarding abuse of prisoners and
Dr. Carmona's statements. Someone who posted later made some linkages and
associations that I do not understand and for reasons that are beyond the
focus of this compliment and support of Dr. Carmona.
I will continue to stay focused on the original intent of the original post.
As far as torture is concerned, it can be defined many ways. Some of my
residents might consider the mandate for attention to detail, acceptance of
responsibility, personal and professional discipline, starting and ending on
time, pursuit of excellence that I demand in patient care and enforce at even
this morning's Surgical M&M at the Ben Taub General Hospital to be torture.
I would not use such a word, I would underscore the environment to prepare
future surgical leaders to care for anyone on this list server.

Like a misguided resident on rounds although the question wasn't directed at me, I'll answer it anyway. I also support Dr Carmona's truthful testimony as is everyone's duty when subpeonaed (sp?). My comments were directed at the surprise evinced at the political nature of the position and the failure to report the similar comments made by Koop and Satcher.

What this TEST WORKS experient shows me is that we could very easily clog
the bandwidth with meaningless communications and thus render this resource
inefficient. Perhaps what we need are guidelines for trauma-l use in
critical incidents in order to facilitate meaningful traffic.

I do have some problems with Dr Carmona's silence during his tenure. First as a political appointee he must have known there will be pressure. If he accepted the position nonetheless, he either should have told the scientific truth,& faced the consequences - he after all assumed a tremendous responsibility as the nation's doctor - or he didn't feel too distressed at being muzzled.

I am totally supportive of Dr. Richard Carmona's decision to testify before
Congress. I support what he said. I support what Dr. Satcher and Koop

I do have some knowledge about this issue. Both those who aspire to such
positions, their mind set and motivations as well as instructions to them
during the selection and interview process. One could ask the same concerns
regarding ANY "general" or "admiral" who is also a doctor in any branch of the
military. This is not a Dr. Carmona limited issue. It has been a problem
since Dr. Berry was Deputy Sec of Defense for Health Affairs many years ago.
