Thanks for this. Very insightful, hopeful and interesting. The lessons
extend beyond Islam, though. Fundamentalism in any faith can be invoked
by the charismatic to variously seduce, incite or enslave primitive
minds. You'll recall that Martin Luther's own ideas were leveraged to
ill ends by a little gang we used to call the Nazis...
We should be less eager to seek out Martin Luthers, and more interested
in illuminating dark and desperate cultures and societies.
And invasion and occupation don't count as illumination. See also THE
CRUSADES.
