I have those papers.   I have some familiarity with statistical  sampling and 
comparison of data.  I understand control groups.    I understand the fallacy 
of historic controls.   Read the papers  carefully.   Ask about the 
appropriateness of their "controls" and  comparison groups.   Very often the 
conclusions are written and the  abstract are written prior to data analysis.   Very 
very often such  papers have abstracts and conclusions which are not born out by 
the published  data.
