IVC Filters in Multi Trauma patients with DVT....

I don't think there are any evidence based guidelines. A follow-up study
to the DeCousus study comparing heparin to IVC filters in patients with
DVT did show some long term benefit in the patients who had filters
placed. These were permanent filters to begin with, though. We would
leave the filter in for one month and then retrieve it if the patient
were stable on anticoagulation.

Subject: IVC Filters in Multi Trauma patients with DVT....

Hello all,

We have a patient with a severe head injury and pelvic fractures who had
an IVC filter inserted post confirmation of a right calf DVT (proven on
U/S).

The filter was inserted 10 days post injury and has been insitu for 14
days.

Is there any evidence based practice/guidelines on the timing of removal
of the IVC filter with a known DVT??

If there is any protocol available that would be appreciated also.

Feel free to contact off list. amit.rana at sesiahs.health.nsw.gov.au

Thanks in advance,
