Ken, I am a cardiac anesthesiologist for 20 yrs and there are many studies showing the appropriateness of estimating EF and CO by experienced echocardiographers. We almost always agree when we look at it with the cardiac surgeon and/ or the cardiologist. It is an EXCELLENT tool in showing that.
In a trauma patient you don't look at the EF, just really at the PE or VOLUME LOADING. As you know, the exactness doesn't really matter here, in a trauma patient the volume is either normal or low, that's good enough. Perhaps your trust in the technique has been shaken by many who know how to insert it in the esophagus, but not how to read it correctly.Ivan Hronek MDChief, Critical Care & Trauma AnesthesiaSFMC Gas, Inc.St. Francis Medical Center3630 E.
