For penetrating trauma, I personally PREFER plain abdominal x-ray to CT
scanning. For blunt trauma, CT scanning is OK, but massively overused and many
VOMITS occur. For penetrating trauma, CT scanning is next to useless.

I was surprised to read that a recent publication from the Royal College of
Radiologists (Making the best use of clinical radiology services, 6th
edition) has advocated the use of plain abdominal X-rays in both blunt and
penetrating abdominal trauma. However, I'm not aware of anywhere that still does plain
X-rays for abdo trauma.
Does anyone know of any evidence for or against? Any views? Have I missed
something?
Thanks,
