The etiology of the coma from that viewpoint is irrelevant. The fact that everyone around the world considers the "post-ictal" state immune to aspiration and don't intubate is amazing. It is amazing how thoughtless we can be.
There was an amusing comment on ccm-l, I think it was Marqo, who stated that the WORST place to have a seizure is an ER. In all other places, the event would pass in a few minutes & life would go on. In an ER, in th blink of an eye, the hapless patient would be intubated, then possibly ventilated & whisked off to ICU. Would end up leaving hospital in days rather than in hours.
