I would remind all of us that one of the strengths of the Trauma Surgeon
is brutal honesty - toward others and especially directed toward
ourselves. It is true that we are frequently more competent to treat
injuries in areas where specialty trained surgeons who do elective
surgery are not as skilled. But to have delusions of adequacy because we
occasionally staple a lung or put a stitch in the vena cava but don't
really have the training or expertise to do complex thoracic or vascular
repairs is a dangerous tendency. If you honsetly would not have someone
with your level of expertise operate on your injured son or daughter
then you should arrange for a competent specialty trained colleague to
be ready to assist you when these injuries present.

We have distinguished ourselves by our abitily to focus on results,
learn, and improve. We need to be rigorous in this regard also. The
challenge will grow more intense as trauma operative volume continues to
fall. Who will be the "big case" operating surgeons of the future? We
need to address this and make certain that we provide our patients with
well trained and experienced surgeons. We can team up with our
colleagues to make this a reality.=20

Capable (and boarded) in Vascular Surgery, crack lots of chest but
always get help in Thoracic, and always have a trauma general surgeon
