Hi Paddy,

I went through trauma at Bara 3 years ago as a UK medical student. Great time, more experience than I thought possible in a few weeks. Found the Oxford handbook as already recommended very good but difficult to find over here, but you can buy it from the University of Witwatersrand bookshop where you'll go for your induction meeting anyway. When I got out there was surprised to be prescribing so widely so recommend a BNF or something similar, and the always useful Oxford Handbook of Clin Med. I also took eye protection in the form of glasses and a spare box of latex gloves as sometimes supplies could get a bit low. I was advised to take shirts, ties and smart trousers but soon these were ditched for t-shirts and trousers.

The staff were great, you'll probably feel a bit in the deep end if Irish training is anything like UK training, but don't worry about saying you aren't happy doing things if you aren't, but then observe and do the next one.

I'm still buzzing 3 years on from it, and hope some day to return.
Good Luck!
