<BODY><P>The call for blood is a common kneejerk reaction but one that almost never is needed. The 9/11 experience is a perfect case in point as tens of thousands of units of blood were wasted and the donor pool exhausted leading to a real blood shortage afterwards. </P>
<P>People have a need to "do something" after such an event and donating blood is a tangible way they feel they can help. It is most not often needed.</P>
